Abstract
Human Rights has always been an important issue in the Presidential Candidate debate in the Presidential Election contestation. This issue became an important theme in the first presidential candidate debate in the 2024 Presidential Election. Kompas and Tempo are mainstream media that consistently present human rights issues in their news but have different positions towards the government in relation to resolving human rights issues. This study aims to examine the framing of Human Rights Issues in the First Presidential Debate in Kompas and Tempo news reports between November 7, 2023-January 21, 2024. The study uses the constructivist paradigm and the framing analysis method of Zhondang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki. This study uses a framing structure based on syntax, script, thematic, and rhetoric in the news reports of the two media. The results of the study show that there are differences in the way Kompas.com and Tempo.co frame human rights issues, where Kompas.com is more neutral and balanced. The three candidates and their visions regarding human rights in the debate are presented in different news reports. While Tempo.co focuses more critically on the candidates regarding their visions regarding human rights, especially Prabowo and Gibran. The sources chosen are not limited to candidates and presidential election organizers but also human rights activists and families of victims of human rights violations. Kompas.com rarely uses idioms with a critical tone. Even if it is found, it is more neutral as if it does not show commitment. While Tempo.co more often uses idioms that have a harsh tone of criticism such as an empty barrel makes the loudest noise.
