Abstract
Literature has been widely known to mold characters, and therefore children literature has the capacity to mold children’s character. Among all the genres of children literature, folktale is believed to be the one that educate children the most. For centuries, folktales have been used for many educational purposes, such as to instruct children and to transmit values from generation to generation. It is therefore unsurprising that parents and educators have a high trust on folktales. Folktales are assumed to be trustworthy texts as high quality texts for children and therefore folktales are always selected by those who wish to provide high quality readings for children. However, assuming that all folktales are guaranteed to educate children with positive values will only weaken parents and educators’ critical stance to folktales, a stance that they generally use in choosing educative reading materials for children. Although it is true that folktales have many positive teachings useful for children, not all teachings embedded in folktales are positive. There can be unconstructive messages, as well as teachings that are not relevant to today’s life found in many folktales. This paper deals with a well-known folktale from Indonesia, titled Timun Mas (The Golden Cucumber). It discusses the positive values embedded in the folktale that will be advantageous to be transmitted to children. It also reveals the not-so-positive teachings in the tale that should be questioned if passed on to today’s Indonesian children. It then proposes a reconstruction version of the Timun Mas tale; a version that contains healthier values to be transmitted to the next generation. The more positive reconstructed version of Timun Mas will thus reconstruct childhood in Indonesia to a more positive future.
