Abstract
Folktales do not belong to one time or place, nor are stories that merely survive from an ancient culture, but are dynamic and ever-changing. How a tale ends may change from time to time, and while an important function of folktales is to teach audiences the principles of living a good life, this may be done by warning against wrong behaviour or rewarding positive behaviour. This principle guides the retelling of “The Origin of the Asmat Frog” in this collection, as the teller may choose either a version in which the grandmother’s curse destroys the family or a version in which the characters progress from divisive behaviour – separation of grandmother and grandchildren and of boy and girl, and the deeper divisions caused by the taboo fish – to active cooperation which not only restores what was lost but brings about closer bonds than previously existed. All three retellings in this collection share such an aspiration to define a life well lived. The “Asmat frog” points to another element in these tales, their inclusion of pourquoi stories – stories about how things in nature came to be. This tale not only explains why a particular kind of frog lives on riverbanks, but identifies a spiritual quality in the natural world. “Princess Luhu” answers the question of how place-names come into being, while the third tale offers a folktale explanation for the formation of Lake Sentani. The heroines and heroes of these tales are tested and must draw upon their own resources for survival or to bring wellbeing to their communities. In “How Lake Sentani was Formed” the main characters almost fail in their quest by forgetting the conditions set by the helpful King, but gain forgiveness and defeat a magical dragon by their wits and the King’s gift rather than by weapons. A victim of foreign invasion and masculine oppression, Princess Luhu must find the strength first to escape her captors and then to accept her undesired role as an unmarried mother. Narrated from the point of view of the princess, the tale introduces the popular feminist theme of exerting agency over the choices that must be faced. It closes with a metaphor that because of her actions she dwells in sunshine even during rain, but this is a metaphor that also has social and national implications.
