Application of resonance-Raman spectroscopy to bacteriochlorophyll a (BChl a) and bacteriopheophytin a (BPhe a) to detect the effects of excitation to the lowest triplet (T1) and singlet (S1) excited states and of oxidation to the cation-radical (D0) state is reviewed; in BChl a, the effects of axial coordination in the different electronic states are also shown
