Abstract
Breaking down the patriarchal system through efforts for gender equality is depicted through the character Alina in the film Hati Suhita. Alina is represented as a female leader who is able to show equality in matters that are considered taboo by patriarchal society in the context of the Islamic boarding school environment. It is important to see the meaning of gender equality in Alina's character among female students. For this reason, this research uses a qualitative approach and a constructivist paradigm. The research method is reception analysis with reception theory as the main analytical tool. Supported by the concept of gender equality, film, Islamic boarding schools and female students. The findings are the result of interviews with 5 female students aged between 15 - 25 years with various backgrounds and personal characteristics. The results obtained showed that 3 female students interpreted dominantly hegemony, the rest interpreted it through negotiation and opposition. This means that the majority of female students recognize gender equality through women's leadership in the Islamic boarding school environment. It also reflects the Islamic boarding school's efforts to create an inclusive and fair environment for women. The factors that influence meaning are thought to be influenced by the family background of each informant, especially in looking at the position of women in the context of Islamic religion, customs and culture.
