Abstract

The phenomenon of family communication climate undergoes complex dynamics when faced with emotional conflict, especially following the loss of a parental figure. The film Bila Esok Ibu Tiada represents these dynamics through various forms of messages in family interactions. This study aims to identify message forms within the family communication climate using Jack Gibb’s theory through qualitative content analysis. The findings reveal a dominance of empathetic messages within supportive communication climates and evaluative messages within defensive climates. The absence of equality- and strategy-based messages indicates a strong hierarchical structure within the family, as well as a tendency toward direct and open communication patterns within the Indonesian collectivist family context resulting in vertical relationships and minimal manipulation. The dominance of empathetic messages illustrates that communication within Indonesian families is deeply influenced by emotional values, affection, and embedded caregiving roles, especially in parent–child relationships. Communication between children and mothers is primarily built on empathy and expressions of affection, while interactions among siblings tend to reflect hierarchical tension and role rivalry, often generating a defensive climate. This aligns with Indonesian collectivist culture, which emphasizes family harmony, respect for elders, and the value of mutual cooperation (gotong royong). The film serves not only as entertainment but also as a reflection of cultural values and the communication dynamics within Indonesian families during emotional crises.
